January update available for Galaxy S10 & S20 FE 5G in the US

Samsung‘s January 2023 security update is available for a host of Galaxy smartphones in the US. The new security release is rolling out to the Galaxy S20 FE 5G, Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, and Galaxy S10+. These phones have already picked up the latest SMR (Security Maintenance Release) in most markets. It patches more than 70 security vulnerabilities, the vast majority of which were labeled “high-severity” issues by Google and Samsung.

Samsung began seeding the January SMR to the Galaxy S20 FE 5G in the US a couple of weeks back as part of the Android 13 update. But the initial rollout was limited to factory-unlocked units on a couple of network operators (firmware version G781U1UEU9FWA7). In recent days, the company has expanded the rollout for unlocked units widely across all major networks. Moreover, it has also released the same update for carrier-locked models. The firmware build number for these devices is G781USQS9GWA4.

The rollout of the January security patch for the Galaxy S10 series, meanwhile, has just begun in the US. The update is live for unlocked variants with firmware version G97*U1UES8IWA1. It is available for units on most carrier networks, including AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, Comcast, US Cellular, Cricket Wireless, Xfinity Mobile, and more (via). The update should soon reach the remaining few carriers as well. Samsung should also expand the rollout to carrier-locked models of the Galaxy S10 trio in the coming days.

The latest security update isn’t yet available for the Galaxy S10 5G in the US, though. The world’s first 5G smartphone has been left out for the time being. We hope Samsung to cover it with the new SMR soon. If you’re using any of these Galaxy smartphones, you can check for updates from the Software update menu in your phone’s Settings app. Tap on Download and install to see if an update is pending. If you don’t see any updates, wait a few days and check again.

Galaxy devices are already getting the February security update

In a continued pattern, Samsung has once again become the first Android OEM to release the latest security update to its devices. The company started rolling out the February SMR earlier today. The update is currently only available for the Galaxy Note 20 series in Europe. But it should just be a matter of time before the rollout goes global, with the Korean behemoth adding more models to the party. We will keep you posted with all those updates.
