During the Galaxy Unpacked event last week, Samsung showed us glimpses of a couple of short films shot with the Galaxy S23 Ultra. One of those was a film titled “Behold” by world-renowned British director-producer Sir Ridley Scott, best known for movies like The Martian, Blade Runner, Gladiator, and more. The company has now released the full film on YouTube.
Samsung releases a short film shot with the Galaxy S23 Ultra
Behold is a story of a young man who “finds that good things and good behavior are a way out of his dark world”. The film is just under four minutes long and mostly shot in low-light conditions. Samsung used clips from the short film while announcing the low-light photography and videography capabilities of the Galaxy S23 Ultra. Behold now shows you why the company is emphasizing that so much.
As you can see in the video embedded below, the new Galaxy flagship can record excellent high-resolution videos in dark environments. Of course, Sir Ridley Scott used stabilizing mounts and other camera gear for shooting the film. But the overall outcome is good enough for the Galaxy S23 Ultra to be a viable portable alternative to professional video cameras.
“This small object (referring to the Galaxy S23 Ultra and future smartphones) is going to take the place of all the big cameras, which is great,” Sir Ridley Scott said in a BTS (behind the scenes) video of Behold, which you can watch here. He said the small size of the phone allowed him to go in small rooms or spaces where he couldn’t usually go with a professional video camera.
Flavio Labiano, who is the cinematographer of this short film, was also full of praise for the Galaxy S23 Ultra. “At first, I feared it wouldn’t give me the range of options I normally have available when working. But once I became accustomed to its settings, I was pleasantly surprised by how versatile it was,” he said. “I was impressed with its capabilities, the quality of the image, and the dynamic range of the sensor.”
There’s another similar short film pending release
As said earlier, Samsung teased two short films shot with the Galaxy S23 Ultra during last week’s Galaxy Unpacked event. The other film, titled “Faith”, is a thriller written and directed by South Korean director Na Hong-jin. It also leverages the phone’s low-light video capabilities. Samsung has yet to release the full film, but you can watch its BTS below.
