Snapdragon SoC names may get confusing again

According to a tipster, Snapdragon SoC names may get confusing again. Yogesh Brar tweeted out that he “heard” that Qualcomm plans to start using the ‘P’ and ‘T’ letters in its Snapdragon SoC branding.

Snapdragon SoC names may become confusing again

He gave out some examples in his tweet, the ‘Snapdragon 7 Gen 2P’ and ‘Snapdragon 7 Gen 2T’. Needless to say, that’s not ideal, as it’s quite confusing, and hopefully the company won’t go through with this.

Qualcomm opted to simplify things at the end of 2011, when the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 was announced. That name may also not be ideal, but it’s a lot better in this form, than with an added letter after it.

So, for example, for 2022, we had two flagships SoCs from the company, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. Qualcomm also released the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, for example. The 7 series represents the company’s mid-range offering.

Qualcomm utilized odd naming schemes in the past

Prior to this, Qualcomm had some really odd naming choices. It upgraded the Snapdragon 765G to the Snapdragon 768G, for example. The flagship SoC didn’t have the ‘G’ addition, and so on. There are a lot of examples of this. The company basically used three digits, and sometimes even the ‘G’ letter. The letter ‘G’, by the way, stands for ‘Elite Gaming’ or simply ‘Gaming’.

We hoped such naming is a thing of the past, but that may not be the case. Qualcomm still didn’t confirm anything, of course, and hopefully this won’t happen. It’s just a wild rumor at this point.

We just got used to the ‘Gen X’ naming scheme, which kind of makes sense, even though it’s a mouthful. It would be weird for Qualcomm to backtrack like this, but considering previous naming schemes, who knows? We’ll just have to wait and see.
