It didn’t take Samsung long to release the May 2023 update for the carrier-locked variants of its latest foldables in the US. Both Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 are widely picking up the latest security patch stateside. The update should reach all eligible users within the next few days.
Samsung started rolling out the May SMR (Security Maintenance Release) to the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 a couple of days back. It began the rollout in the US ahead of international markets. However, the company initially only covered factory-unlocked units of the foldable duo. Those devices picked up the update with the firmware build numbers F936U1UES2CWD7 and F721U1UES2CWD7, respectively.
While the May SMR still hasn’t reached any other market outside the US, Samsung has quickly expanded the rollout to cover carrier-locked units of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4. The update is currently available for these phones on a handful of networks, including T-Mobile, Comcast, Metro, and Xfinity Mobile. A wider rollout should follow in the coming days. The updated build numbers are F936USQS2CWD9 and F721USQS2CWD9, respectively (via).
Like unlocked variants, carrier-locked Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 are also only getting the latest security fixes with this update. Samsung isn’t pushing any new features or other user-facing changes to the two foldables. This isn’t surprising as they recently received the One UI 5.1 update with tons of goodies. The next big feature update should be the Android 14-based One UI 6.0. Samsung has already started testing the new version internally. A stable release is expected in October.
Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 get dozens of security fixes with the May update
The latest update for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 may not bring anything notable for users but it contains plenty of security fixes. Samsung has already revealed that the May SMR patches six critical and more than 50 high-severity vulnerabilities across the Galaxy lineup. In total, we are getting over 70 patches this month, around 20 of which are Galaxy-exclusive. The remaining patches come from Google and apply to Android products from other brands as well.
If you’re using the latest Samsung foldables in the US, go to the Settings app, tap on Software update, and then on Download and install to check for new updates. Users in other markets can also follow these steps to see if they have a pending update. If not, wait a few days and check again. You may also get a notification once the update reaches your Galaxy Z Fold 4 or Galaxy Z Flip 4 unit.
