Nobody likes seeing ads when they’re trying to watch content, but it’s a growing reality. More services have been pushing more ads down our throats in order to compensate for revenue losses in our diminishing global economy. According to 9To5Google, YouTube on TV will be getting 30-second unskippable ads.
Streaming services such as Twitch have been getting a lot of flack for their recent increase in advertising. Its parent company Amazon has been feeling the heat from the current economic conditions, and that’s trickling down to Twitch. It’s much the same story with YouTube.
Over the past several months, people have been seeing more and more advertisements, and that can really diminish the video-watching experience. It gets to a point where there’s no point in watching the video if you have to watch so many ads before it.
YouTube on TV will be getting 30-second unskippable ads
The YouTube app on smart TVs will be making a bit of a change to its advertising strategy, as stated in a recent keynote by the company. For starters, selected content will have a 30-second ad before viewing rather than two 15-second ads. However, this seems like it’ll be targeted toward the best-performing videos. So, not everyone will see them.
YouTube will also put advertisements on your post screen. When you pause the video, you’ll see your content shrink a bit and the ad will come in from the right side. The ad itself doesn’t seem to be very robust. It’ll be a still image with a QR code and a dismiss button at the bottom.
These will not be video ads, and you can skip them immediately by just pressing the play button. This is similar to what Paramount+ does with its pause menu. On certain content, when you pause your video, you’ll see an advertisement for another Paramount+ show fill the screen.
It might annoy people seeing advertisements on their pause screen, but you have to admit that this is the most out-of-the-way method of advertising. Hopefully, if the economic conditions improve, we may see fewer ads in the future.
