Samsung‘s July update for the Galaxy S22 series has reached the US. Both carrier-locked and unlocked variants of the 2022 Galaxy flagships are picking up the latest security patch stateside. It contains patches for no less than 90 vulnerabilities.
The Galaxy S22 series was one of the first Samsung devices to receive the July SMR (Security Maintenance Release). The company pushed the latest security update to the phones shortly after the Galaxy S23 series earlier this week. While the rollout for the latter began in the US, the 2022 models first got it in Europe. Thankfully, US users didn’t have to wait long.
The July update for the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and Galaxy S22 Ultra in the US is rolling out widely across most wireless networks. The new firmware build number for carrier-locked units is S901USQS3CWF3, while that for factory-unlocked phones is S901U1UES3CWF3. Samsung’s official changelog confirms that this update is all about the latest security fixes. The phones aren’t getting anything else.
Speaking of security fixes, the July SMR contains as many as 90 of those. More than 50 of the fixes are part of Google’s latest ASB (Android Security Bulletin). These security fixes come from Google or vendors of other compromised components that make up Android phones. The remaining 40-odd patches are Galaxy-specific and come directly from Samsung. These issues don’t exist on Android products from other brands.
At least three Android OS issues patched this month were critical flaws. These could pave the way for remote attackers to gain access to an affected phone without the user’s knowledge or intervention. The July update will patch the vulnerability on Galaxy devices. If you’re using a Galaxy S22 model in the US, watch out for a notification in the coming days. You can also check for OTA (over the air) updates manually from the Settings app.
More Galaxy devices will get the July update soon
Since updating the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S22 phones to the July security patch, Samsung has pushed the latest SMR to the Galaxy S21 series, Galaxy Z Flip 3, Galaxy S20 FE, Galaxy Note 10 series, and Galaxy A53 5G in various parts of the world. It will continue to update more phones in the coming days. At the same time, the company will expand the availability of the update for these phones to more markets. We will keep you posted as Samsung embarks on a journey to push new updates to dozens of Galaxy devices.
