Lenovo's Legion GO gaming handheld has Switch-style controllers

Lenovo’s Legion Go gaming handheld has made an appearance in some freshly leaked images, and it reveals quite a bit about the device. While there are no mentions of detailed specifications, the images do show what the device appears to look like.

These are the first images to show up of Lenovo’s handheld gaming PC. Which is set to be in competition with the Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and other similar devices from Ayaneo and Onex. The Legion Go is likely to come running on Windows 11 just like the Ally. Although it’s unclear if Lenovo will have worked out one of the main complaints users have about these handhelds. Which is a handheld mode for Windows that functions more like the Steam Deck UI. As the UI on the Steam Deck is infinitely more user-friendly.

Leaked Legion Go images show Nintendo Switch-like design

When it comes to the physical design, Lenovo seems to have taken some inspiration from the Nintendo Switch with the controllers. You’ll also find a similar design with the Onexplayer 2. Which features detachable Joy-Con-like controllers if you want to play games in a tabletop mode.

The Legion Go also appears to have a wide kickstand on the back not too unlike the Switch OLED. This should help with keeping it more secure when playing games in tabletop mode since the kickstand covers the width of the device. One interesting choice here is that Lenovo seems to have added multiple macro buttons. Having said that, it’s not the fact that they’re there that makes it interesting. It’s the placement.

To start, there are two on the right side of the controller. Although strangely, the right trigger curves over the side and is essentially the same rocker as the top of those two macro buttons. There’s also two more remappable keys on the backside of right controller grip. And an addition two on the left controller grip.

Although for some reason Lenovo decided to make them vertical on the left controller and horizontal on the right one. On the face of the controllers you more or less have your standard setup. Two joysticks, a d-pad, and four action buttons. And it looks like Lenovo has added a touchpad on the right controller. Likely for mouse use as it would be paired with the scroll wheel on the back of that same controller. The leaks also mention it running on AMD’s Phoenix processors. And there appears to be two USB-C ports and 3.5mm audio port too.

While some of the design decisions may seem a bit odd, it could turn out to be a very good gaming handheld. Battery life and performance will of course play a big part in that.
