Ahead of Android 14, Google announces new Android features coming soon

While we continue to wait for Android 14 to launch, Google is announcing a number of new features for Google apps.

First up, we have the At A Glance widget which is part of the Google app. The At A Glance widget will use AI to bring you helpful information like high-precision weather alerts, dynamic travel updates and upcoming event reminders right on your home screen, right when you need them.

Google is also updating the Lookout app, which is an accessibility app. So what’s new this time around? Well, Google is making it easier to see photos in your group chat, camera or even social media, for those that are blind or have low-vision. You’ll also be able to use AI to generate more detailed descriptions on these photos.

New communication apps coming to Android Auto

Google is announcing that some new communication apps are coming to Android Auto soon. And actually, these were announced earlier this year. But that includes Webex by Cisco and Zoom. So you can take important meeting calls while you’re on the road. These calls are controlled through Android Auto, so you can mute and end the call easily from the steering wheel controls. Keep in mind that these will be audio calls only.

Google Wallet Pass photo import is also coming. Which will let you digitize passes that have a barcode or a QR code. This includes things like a gym card or a library card, that probably don’t have support for Google Wallet. But now they can.

Finally, Google and Fitbit are adding activity and sleep date into personal Routines. This is going to allow you to ask Google for a recap of your sleeping stats in the morning. Just add your hours slept and sleep start time to your Good Morning Routine.

These updates will be rolling out any time now, as these apps all get updated over the coming weeks. There’s no new Android update needed.
