Google’s Pixel series is considered one of the smartest smartphone lineups on the planet, thanks in part to Google’s optimization and focus on user-friendly features. And after the launch of the Pixel 8 series, all eyes have turned to the budget Pixel 8a, which could launch next year if the rumours hold true.
While the A series is Google’s affordable line of phones, it still represents a significant financial commitment, particularly in developing countries. This prompts the question: Will Google ever release a sub-$200 phone? Answering this in an interview with Austria’s Der Standard, Nanda Ramachandran, the company’s VP of mobile business, stated that they currently have no plans to make a budget smartphone.
Why won’t Google make a budget phone?
According to Ramcharan, the compromises required to make a budget Pixel device would mean sacrificing essential components that define the Pixel experience, i.e. top-tier camera, security features, and advanced AI capabilities. Taking cues from the Pixel 7A, Ramcharan explained that the device strikes a delicate balance between price and performance, featuring a camera hardware upgrade, a 90Hz display, and the Tensor G2 chip.
“We would have to make too many compromises for that,” said Ramcharan.
Furthermore, Google’s recent commitments to long-term support for its devices might also influence this decision. This is because the company has pledged seven years of Android and security updates for the Pixel 8 series, along with providing spare parts during the same timeframe. Therefore, introducing a new budget Pixel would complicate matters, as the same level of support may not be achievable.
Price increases on the Pixel 8 series
When talking about the price increases on the Pixel 8 series, Ramcharan justified the hike by highlighting significant improvements in display quality, camera functions, and the upgraded Tensor G3 chip. Additionally, he also mentioned that the company has revamped almost every aspect of the Pixel 8 when compared to the Pixel 7.
