ASUS is planning a 2nd Gen ROG Ally for 2024

ASUS has only barely launched the ROG Ally gaming handheld a little more than half a year ago, and it’s already apparently hard at work on a 2nd Gen model. That’s probably not too surprising to some. After all, Valve has already put out the OLED model of the Steam Deck which comes with a few improvements. That being said, Valve hasn’t really made many performance updates to the majority of the hardware. At this time it’s unclear if ASUS plans to do the same thing with its with 2nd Gen model of the ROG Ally.

Regardless of what the ROG Ally 2.0 (not an official name) will feature, it does indeed appear to be coming. Speaking with India publication Techlusive, ASUS India VP Arnold Su has confirmed the device. “We most likely will launch a second-generation [handheld gaming console] this year. We will still keep the Windows features, but we will focus more on gaming,” said Su. Now the questions remain, when will the next ROG Ally arrive, and what will be different about it?

ASUS doesn’t say how the 2nd Gen ROG Ally will be an improvement

If you were hoping for a morsel, just a tiny crumb of details about the hardware, you’re going to be disappointed. Because right now ASUS has nothing to share about the 2nd Gen Ally’s improvements.

Techlusive’s interview with Su doesn’t mention anything about the hardware, new features, or any of the specs. ASUS likely isn’t ready to share anything about the device yet outside of the fact that it’s in development and has a 2024 release window. How much it will cost, how many models there will be, and when it will be released are all still up in the air. At least for anyone who doesn’t work at ASUS on this product.

You can, of course, make some educated guesses. The obvious areas for improvement would be a more power-efficient processor and GPU. These would also likely lead to better performance. Furthermore, a larger capacity battery and just longer battery life in general. Perhaps even the jump to an OLED display for better picture quality. As for a release date, maybe ASUS is targeting the same timeframe it had for 2023? Whenever it plans to launch this year, ASUS could do a better job of choosing an official announcement time.

Because announcing your very real product that you hope to sell the day before April Fool’s is just not a great idea. That is if you want consumers to believe it’s real.
