Mysterious Google SoC spotted on Geekbench, could be Tensor G4

Amid rumors that Google will launch the Pixel Fold 2 with the Tensor G4 chip this fall, a mysterious Google device has popped up on Geekbench with a mysterious chipset. The device in question bears the codename “Tokay”, which we haven’t heard of before. However, there are hints of it being a Tensor G4-powered product, which we will discuss in detail shortly. In that case, the SoC we are looking at must be Google’s next-gen custom processor for Pixels.

The mysterious Google chipset could be the Tensor G4

There are two listings for the Google Tokay on Geekbench 5, published within 20 minutes of each other. The device has 8GB RAM And runs Android 14. It scored 1,048 and 2,788 in the first round of single-core and multi-core CPU tests, respectively. In the second round, it scored 1,082 and 3,121, respectively. These aren’t the most impressive Geekbench 5 scores for a flagship-level chipset. However, the scores are of the least concern here.

The chipset in question has an octa-core (eight cores) CPU setup. If you remember, the Tensor G3 has nine CPU cores, so this is a sort of downgrade. However, looking at the clock speed, the SoC is fitting to be the successor to the Pixel 8’s processor. It has one prime CPU core operating at 3.10GHz, three mid-cores at 2.60GHz, and four efficiency cores clocked at a frequency of 1.95GHz.

To recall, the Tensor G3 features one ARM Cortex-X3 prime core clocked at 2.91GHz, four Cortex-A715 mid-cores at 2.37GHz, and four Cortex-A510 efficiency cores at 1.70GHz. So, the mysterious Google chipset spotted on Geekbench is an upgrade over it. Despite featuring one less CPU core, Google could easily pass it off as the Tensor G4 for the Pixel 9 series. There’s another reason why it could be the Tensor G4—the codename isn’t entirely a mystery.

The Google Tokay might be the next foldable or a smaller Pixel 9 Pro

Some of you might be aware that Google uses matching codenames for Pixel devices powered by the same chipset. For example, the Tensor G2-powered Pixel 7 series has the codenames “Cheetah” and “Panther.” The Pixel Fold, which features the same chipset, is codenamed “Felix” (originally codenamed “Passport” but later changed to match the cat family).

The codenames for the Pixel 8 series are “Shiba” and “Husky”. The Pixel Fold 2, on the other hand, is codenamed “Comet”, which isn’t a dog breed. This suggests the next-gen foldable won’t feature the Tensor G3, though Google has a history of changing codenames midway through development. That must happen if it wants to keep the tradition as the Pixel 9 series uses reptile-related codenames—”Komodo” and “Caiman”.

Now, coming to the Google “Tokay” spotted on Geekbench, it could be part of the Pixel 9 lineup or the new codename of the Pixel Fold 2. That’s based on the fact that Tokay is a species of Gecko lizard belonging to the reptiles family. Since there are rumors about a smaller Pixel 9 Pro, we are inclined towards “Tokay” being its codename—Tokay Gecko is a much smaller reptile in front of Komodo and Caiman.

Unfortunately, all of this is just speculation for now. We can’t even tell if the Geekbench 5 listings are genuine. It isn’t difficult to fabricate or manipulate benchmark entries. While there are some hints at the Google Tokay being a Tensor G4-powered Pixel 9 model or the next foldable, we cannot jump to a conclusion until we have more information or additional pieces of evidence. We will keep you posted.
