Summary: Google has officially rolled out version 135 of the Chrome app on Android. The latest version brings an edge-to-edge design for a more immersive browsing experience on Android smartphones. Now, the solid gesture bar doesn’t show up, allowing the web content to extend to the bottom of the screen. A similar update for Android tablets will follow down the line.
Last month, Google announced that it was testing a new version of Chrome on Android that uses maximum screen space for a smoother and more immersive experience. Well, that version is officially here. Google has reportedly rolled out version 135 of the Chrome browser, bringing an edge-to-edge design on Android.
Google Chrome version 135 brings an edge-to-edge design to Android smartphones
Folks over at 9to5Google first spotted this change after installing the latest update for Chrome via the Google Play Store. If you haven’t updated the app yet, be sure to do it right away to experience Chrome’s edge-to-edge design on Android. Previously, Android’s solid-colored gesture navigation bar was viewable when you scrolled through a webpage on the Chrome browser.
After updating the Chrome Android app to version 135, you’ll no longer see it. Now, the gesture bar appears on top of the webpage while scrolling, offering a more immersive experience. Do note that this change doesn’t allow you to view more of the webpage you’re browsing. Instead, Google is catching up with the trend of Android apps transitioning to edge-to-edge designs.
Notably, the background remains visible when you’re at the top of the screen during the initial page load process. The behavior stays the same when you scroll back up on Chrome 135 on Android. However, the gesture bar becomes transparent as you scroll down a webpage, extending web content to the bottom edge.
Google notes that Chrome will display a “dynamic bottom bar,” officially called “the chin,” over the navigation gesture bar, based on the user’s scrolling behavior. The latest update to the UI “causes the viewport to expand, allowing web content to be drawn up to the bottom edge of the device.”
A similar update for Android tablets will be rolled out down the line
The feature introduced with version 135 of the Chrome Android app is noticeable immediately on devices with gesture-based notifications. Those who rely on 3-button navigation won’t see Chrome’s new edge-to-edge design. The revamped design is currently exclusive to Android smartphones. Moreover, the company notes that a similar update might soon follow for devices with large screens, like Android tablets.
