Summary: Google has slashed jobs across its Android and Pixel division, as hundreds of people have lost their jobs. Google is obviously doing some internal restructuring following the merger or Android and Chrome teams.

Google has decided to fire hundreds of employees, unfortunately, based on a report from The Information. The company laid off employees in its platforms and devices unit. Those employees worked on Android software, Pixel phones, and Chrome browser.

Hundreds of people lost their jobs following Google’s latest move

This comes following a merger of Android and Chrome teams, which occurred last year. As a reminder, a few months ago, Google offered voluntary buyouts as part of its restructuring plan. The combined group of employees counted over 20,000, before the buyouts. These layoffs shrunk that number down even further.

This is what Google’s spokesperson had to say: “Since combining the Platforms and Devices teams last year, we’ve focused on becoming more nimble and operating more effectively and this included making some job reductions in addition to the voluntary exit program that we offered in January.”

Google is trying to achieve a more integrated ecosystem following an internal merger

Google is obviously trying to get to a more integrated ecosystem now that it combined the two teams. Needless to say, AI will be a great focus over at the company, as restructuring is taking place.

Unfortunately, though, this is not the first mass layout over at Google. Back in 2023, the company laid off 6% of its global workforce. In other words, around 200,000 people lost their job. So this round of layoffs seems like a chunk change in comparison, and yet it’s still sad, as hundreds of people lost their jobs.

Google is not alone in this. We’ve seen a ton of layoffs across the tech sector in the last couple of years. Company mergers often cause layoffs as well, regarding whether they’re intenral mergers, or mergers with other companies.
