It runs on a tenth-generation Intel Core i5 chipset, and you can get an upgraded model with an i7 inside. So this is a very capable machine.
The 13.5-inch model comes with Intel Iris Plus graphics. Those aren’t the best, but it will get the job done.
If you want something with a more powerful graphics card, pick up the 15-inch model. This year, the 15-inch Surface Laptop 3 is an AMD-powered laptop. With the Ryzen 5 running things. And it comes with the AMD Radeon Vega 9 or you can upgrade to AMD Radeon RX Vega 11 Graphics. That’s a big upgrade over the 13.5-inch model. So if your student is also a gamer, the 15-inch model might be the better option. And it’s starting price is only $200 more.
How much is it, and where can I get it?
The Surface Laptop 3 normally starts at $1299 for the 13.5-inch model and $1499 for the 15-inch model.
However, at the time of writing this, all of the Surface Laptop 3 configurations are at least $300 off of their regular prices. So you can get a 13.5-inch for $999, or the 15-inch for $1199. Which are really great prices, putting them on par with the MacBook Air.
The base model comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of SSD storage. There are also models with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of SSD, 16GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD and finally 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage.
For the majority of people, the base model is going to be perfectly fine. But if you would like more RAM, then the 16GB/256GB is another good option. That price is $1249 currently ($1549 normally).
Both the 13.5 and 15-inch Surface Laptop 3 comes in four colors – Platinum, Cobalt Blue, Matte Black, and Sandstone. The Sandstone and Cobalt Blue come with alcantara on the keyboard.
