Samsung just announced a host of new Galaxy products. The company’s second major Galaxy Unpacked event of the year brought two foldables, three tablets, and a couple of smartwatches. If you haven’t been able to keep up with all the announcements, here’s a round-up of everything the Korean firm unveiled earlier today.
As expected, Samsung today launched the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 foldables with a few notable improvements. Its flagship tablet lineup also got a refresh with three new Galaxy Tab S9 models. Finally, the company debuted the Galaxy Watch 6 series with the iconic physical rotating bezel making a return on the Classic model. Let’s dive deeper into all of these products.
Galaxy Z Fold 5
The Galaxy Z Fold 5 isn’t a huge upgrade over last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 4, but it brings some notable improvements. Most notably, Samsung has reworked the hinge to allow the device to fold shut. There’s no longer a gap between the two halves of the phone when folded. This also means that the foldable is less bulky, while the company has cut some weight as well. It’s the thinnest and lightest Fold yet from Samsung.
Spec-wise, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 features a 7.6-inch main folding display and a 6.1-inch cover display. Both are Dynamic AMOLED 2X panels that support adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz. The main display has a peak brightness of 1750 nits, the same as the Galaxy S23 Ultra. The device also uses the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy processor found inside the Galaxy S23 lineup.
This foldable has five cameras in total, all of which are unchanged from the Fold 4, at least in terms of resolution. The battery capacity (4,400mAh) and charging speed (25W) also remain unchanged. Samsung has made the optional S Pen 41% thinner, though. Pre-orders for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 are now open at Samsung.com and carriers. The foldable starts at $1799 for the 12GB+256GB variant. Open sales begin on August 11.
Galaxy Z Flip 5
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 also gets the same redesigned hinge that lets you fold the device shut. But the latest Flip model comes with an even bigger change on the outside. Samsung has equipped it with a 3.4-inch cover display, which it fondly calls the Flex Window. It supports widgets for several popular apps, with more to come. You can get a lot done on the new Flip without unfolding it.
The rest of the specs don’t change much from the Galaxy Z Flip 4, though. The inner display is a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with a 1-120Hz adaptive refresh rate. Cameras include a 10MP selfie shooter on the inside and two 12MP sensors on the outside. It retains the 3,700mAh battery and 25W charging speed. Both foldables offer an IPX8 rating for water resistance.
Samsung is also taking pre-orders for the Galaxy Z Flip 5 right now. It comes with the same processor but only 8GB of RAM. The base storage variant (256GB) of the device is priced at $999. Like the Fold model, you can pick the new clamshell Galaxy foldable from a nearby Samsung or carrier store starting August 11. Samsung offers exclusive color variants of both models through its website.
Galaxy Tab S9 series
Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S9 series includes three new flagship Android tablets differing in size, battery capacity, and camera setup. The base model features an 11-inch screen, the Plus model a 12.4-inch screen, and the Ultra model a 14.6-inch screen. All three tablets get a Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with 60-120Hz adaptive refresh rate and S Pen support (2.8ms latency). Their battery capacities come in at 8,400mAh, 10,090mAh, and 11,200mAh, respectively.
Coming to the cameras, the base Galaxy Tab S9 features a 13MP main camera and a 12MP selfie shooter. The Galaxy Tab S9+ adds an 8MP ultrawide lens at the back. Finally, the Ultra model adds a second 12MP front camera to the Plus model’s setup. The new tablets include an under-display fingerprint scanner and come with improved quad stereo speakers tuned by AKG with Dolby Atmos support.
For the first time in the lineup’s history, Samsung is offering an official IP rating for dust and water resistance. All three Galaxy Tab S9 models feature an IP68 rating. They use the same processor as the two new foldables and are also guaranteed four years of Android OS updates and five years of security updates. The Galaxy Tab S9 series is available in Wi-Fi-only and 5G versions. Prices start at $799.
Galaxy Watch 6 series
Samsung today also launched the Galaxy Watch 6 and Galaxy Watch 6 Classic. The former comes in 40mm and 44mm sizes, while the latter is available in 43mm and 47mm sizes. The Classic model looks more sporty thanks to the Korean firm’s signatory bezel ring on top. The new watches feature a Sapphire Crystal display of 1.3-inch (40mm and 43mm) or 1.5-inch (44mm and 47mm).
The Galaxy Watch 6 lineup is powered by Samsung’s improved Exynos W930 processor, paired with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of onboard storage. The watches are IP68 and 5ATM-rated and also boast MIL-STD-810H durability. Samsung promises up to 40 hours of battery life without AOD (always-on display) and 30 hours with AOD.
The latest Samsung smartwatches run Wear OS 4-based One UI 5 Watch out of the box. The company touts the new version to bring functional as well as health and fitness improvements. Both Galaxy Watch 6 models will be available in LTE versions. Prices start at $299 for the base model and $399 for the Classic model.
