World Round Up: Sony Soccer Partnership – Orange New Phones, Old Updates – Ice TV Down Under

Sony secure soccer sponsorship
Soccer players in the UK and Europe can get paid the same astronomical wages that basketball players do in the states. The biggest club competition in the game is the UEFA Champions League which pits the mights of such teams as Manchester United and Real Madrid against each other. Never ones to shy away from popularity, Sony Corporation have secured the place of official mobile handset of the competition until 2012. This is  a very smart move – a phone is essential at football matches and Sony and UEFA are teaming up to produce an app to help us keep track of all those nil-nil draws.

New budget handset from Orange and Huawei
I hate this phrase ‘entry level phone’. Its a phone not a large hadron collider. ‘Cheap’ is what they mean, so why not say so? Anyway ranting aside The Huawei U8150 is set to be Orange UK’s first “entry level” Android handset. It only has a 2.7 inch screen and 528Mhz of processing power but comes ready with Froyo (2.2). The price and other details will be announced at the IFA between the 3rd and 9th of September.  The web is full of guesses at the price so I might as well chuck my hand in and say I think it’ll cost no more than £75 ($116). Lets see.

Orange’s frozen yoghurtbeginning to thaw out
Orange have been scoring well on my list of UK carriers and the newly announced delay of the latest operating system, Froyo (2.2) for UK HTC Desire users until the end of September would have knocked them from the top were it not for the fact that the opposition is even tardier.

Ice TV share the love
One of the very few reasons to buy an iPhone in Australia or New Zealand might have been the fantastic Ice TV app, the mobile Electronic Program Guide that lets you record on your PVR remotely. Well now they’ve finally released a beta version for Android which like its shinier but dumber Apple version allows greater functionality to Ice TV subscribers than anonymous users.

BTW
when you’re next in the Android market, do a quick search for Scott Pilgrim, they’re doing a special on the graphic novel based game.
