Daytona is the codename Motorola is using internally for the unannounced Droid X2; the successor to the super-successful flagship device from last year. Motorola has already selected the Tegra 2 Dual Core 1 GHz processor to power their two flagship 4G devices they unveiled at CES earlier this month (Atrix 4G and Bionic). It would only make sense for them to use the processor in what should be another flagship Droid.
Last year Motorola introduced three new Droids all using the same processor across the lineup and this year they appear to be following the same philosophy. Reliable sources from both Droid Life and Hot Hardware have pretty much confirmed this rumor to be true. Along with the super powerful CPU the X2 will feature, per Android and Me:
4.3 inch display with qHD resolution (540 x 960), and all the other bells and whistles found in the original Droid X like 8 MP camera, HDMI out, and HD video capture.
HotHardware claims the operating system is currently set at Android 2.2, but surely Motorola will update that by the rumored launch date of May.
No one is sure at this point whether it will be a 4G LTE device or not. The phone does have eerily similar specifications to the Droid Bionic which will be 4G-capable. The 3G/4G capability might be the differentiating factor, however I fight it difficult to see them releasing such a powerful device with high-end aspirations and crippling it in that way. We should here more at CTIA in March and learn how these two will be separated.
As a current Droid X owner i’m really looking forward to hearing more information about this Superphone. I’m hoping it receives, the full 1 GB of memory featured in the AT&T Atrix 4G, along with that phone’s unmatched laptop-style docking interface, and brings those features to Verizon customers. Wishful thinking…Check back for more information.
