Motorola Mobility Sees Android Variation as Benefit

Motorola Mobility has pledged their allegiance to the Android platform and feels fragmentation allows for differentiation in a crowded market. Christy Wyatt, corporate vice president at Motorola Mobility, at the AnDevCon Android developer conference stated, “Managing differentiation against fragmentation is kind of a delicate balance.”

Is Android Fragmentation A Serious Problem?

Motorola stated that they have developed all of their Android products, released from mid 2010 and forward, to run with a baseline feature set that will work across the board. They did however note that their Atrix 4G and Xoom tablet represent their biggest challenge and one that is facing the Android fragmentation issues of the community as a whole.

This major shift in version difference between 2.3 Gingerbread and 3.0 Honeycomb is causing a lot of headaches initially for consumers and developers. Google is stating that apps designed for the tablet will scale backwards, but apps designed for phones have had some issues scaling up.

Ice Cream To Rectify Android Fragmentation?

The next iteration of the of smartphone OS, Android Ice Cream, is supposed to bring many of the Honeycomb features to the phone OS. Hopefully it brings far greater compadibility for the apps designed for each platform and does a lot to reunify the platform.
