I can’t be in Barcelona for Mobile World Congress, but thankfully news from the event is making it’s way to the USA quickly. At today’s press event, Sony took the wraps off of the new Xperia P and Xperia U, to compliment the flagship device, the previously announced Xperia S.
The Xperia P is a 4″ device that is the first to incorporate the new Sony White Magic display, which is supposed to greatly enhance reading on the device even in bright sunlight. The P also sports a 1Ghz dual core processor and an 8MP rear shooter that captures 1080p video.
The P will also include all new Sony photo, video and music apps and will also incorporate the Sony Entertainment Network. The phones ships with Gingerbread in Q2, but Sony says that an Ice Cream Sandwich update will roll out later in Q2 as well.
The Xperia U is the little brother of the family, but it doesn’t look to be a slouch. Yeah, it’s going to have this lighted band at the bottom that will change colors as the colors on screen shifts, but it’s got other things going for it as well.
It’s going to ship with an unknown 1Ghz processor, a 5MP rear camera and it will also have Gingerbread out of the box with an ICS update to follow later.
Sony is making some of the most unique design choices in the Android world and these devices all have a unique style that may take some getting used to. If the Xperia P or S make their way to Verizon in the USA they’ll be near the top of the list when I replace my aging Palm Pre.
