When you hear the name Archos what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Budget tablets right? And why not, that’s what they have basically made their bones producing, most recently with their Platinum line which was shown off at CES last month. But now it looks like the French manufacturer is finally going to go ahead and release some wallet friendly smartphones.
Archos is actually not a stranger to the Android smartphone world. Just last year they released the Archos 35 Smart Home Phone, although that phone was something that ran on your home network only functioned as a land line. Needless to say it was a bit clunky.
It seems as though Archos will be unveiling three new handsets next week at Mobile World Congress. Of the three smartphones one will be entry level, another will be considered their flagship, and rounding out the trio will be of course a phablet.
First up we’ll take a look at the budget device, the Archos 35. This phone is planned for an April release and will cost €90 or US $120. For short dollars like that you are obviously going to get what you pay for so here are the rest of the specs:
- 3.5″ display with a 320 x 480 pixel resolution
- 1 GHz processor
- 512 MB RAM
- 512 MB internal memory with microSD support
- 3G connectivity
- Dual SIM support
- 1,500mAh battery
- Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
Next up we have what will be considered the manufacturer’s flagship device, the Archos 48 Platinum. In true Archos fashion this device will be sold for the relative small price tag of €249 or US $333. This device is slated for a May release and will carry with it the following specifications:
- 4.8″ IPS display with a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution
- 1.7 GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6589 processor
- FM Radio
- Bluetooth 4.0
- GPS
- 3G connectivity (possible LTE radio as well)
- Android 4.1 Jelly Bean
Last but not least is the phablet, because every company needs to release a phablet these days. This device will be called the Archos 52 Titanium, and although there is no price listed as of yet it will be available to consumers in April. Here is the Spec sheet for the 52 Platinum:
- 5.2″ display with a 800 x 480 pixel resolution
- 1.2 GHz dual-core processor
- 512 MB of RAM
- 4GB of internal memory with microSD support
- 5-megapixel camera
- 2,200mAh battery
- Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
To most of us these all will probably seem like “entry level” devices, but that’s what Archos does. They give us budget products. Do any of these devices tickle your fancy? Let us know in the comments.
