Today’s the day that we’re assuming Google unveil both Android 4.3 and of course the Nexus 7. Which, by now, we know pretty much everything there is to know about it – how it looks, how it performs and how much it’s going to cost. This being Google, we’ve been thinking that they just have to have something up their sleeves that’s a little bit off the wall, right? Well, it looks like that something might just be “Chromecast”, which recently showed up in the recent update of Google Play Music, with the same underlying functions as Apple’s Airplay.
Droid-Life spotted the “Chromecast” listed in a Google support page for devices sold through Google Play, shortly after the listing was taken down but, that’s not the end of the story. Some enterprising fellow decided to have a chat with someone from Google Support, and they got some interesting responses all right.
You can clearly make out above that Paige B – cute name – from Google Support tells our inquisitive friend that Chromecast is a “TV service that’s provided in some areas”. Now, we have no idea what that could be and there’s a strong possibility that she’s getting mixed up with Google TV with Fiber in very few areas of the US but, I think there’s more to it than that.
Paige goes on to tell us that’s it’s a cable service that charges a fee, and it’s only available in a few areas. Does this mean that Google is looking to roll out cable in parts of the US like it has done Fiber? It’s possible, supplying a Google TV box with it would be a pretty good way of shoring up confidence in the ailing platform, that’s for sure. “Chromecast” is a pretty strange name for such a thing and the more I think about it, it sounds like an internal name at Mountain View that Google is having a little fun with. “Chromecast”, “Comcast”, a TV service that you have to pay for – yeah, sounds like Google is getting ready to really move in to our living rooms.
