This year, things are a little different from Motorola and Verizon when it comes to the Droid line-up. While the initial formula is still very much the same, Motorola have really added their own touch when it comes to the Droid Mini, Droid Ultra and the Droid MAXX. You’ll recognize the same Kevlar pattern on the back of each device, and the unibody design apparently makes them stronger and lighter than last year’s offerings.
The Droid Ultra is obviously the flagship of the Droid line for 2013, and will be the phone that Motorola and Verizon will be hoping to sell the most of. Under the hood, things are very different as just like all the Droid phones this year is the “Motorola X8 mobile computing system” which comprises of 2 processor cores, 4 GPU cores, a Contextual Computing Core and a Natural Language Processing Core. This brings features such as Touchless Control, the voice activation feature that we’ve seen leaked many times before now, function so well.
Aside from the new X8 Chip, we know that the Ultra is shipping with a 10-megapixel camera with an f/2.4 lens. During Verizon’s short-lived announcement, they left a lot of information out regarding the specs of these devices. In fact, they were very vague indeed, almost Apple-like in their description of what was under the hood in these new devices. There’s twice the amount of RAM of last year (which we assume to be 2GB) and it looks like the Droid Ultra and the Droid MAXX will be shipping with 5.0-inch HD OLED displays of the 720p variety.
The Ultra comes in at just 7.18mm thin and is available to pre-order right now for $199, orders will ship August 20th. As an incentive, anyone who buys between now and September 30th will get a free six-month subscription to Google Play Music All-Access, which is pretty nice of them.
