The Wall Street Journal has a pretty good record when it comes to rumors and confirmations, in this case, they have sources confirming that the upcoming LG Optimus G2, which is to be introduced at the company’s event on August 7th in New York, will sport a 5.2-inch display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080.
We’ve heard this for a while, seen leaks of the device itself, and LG even recently introduced the world’s thinnest Full HD LCD display, which just happens to be 5.2-inches.
The strange thing about the display for this upcoming device is that LG Display, the subsidiary that manufactures displays for LG’s phones – and LG’s TVs – announced the display, even when everyone is speculating that this is the display the Optimus G2 will use, almost confirming the display themselves instead of leaving the announcement to LG Electronics.
The display is only 2.2 millimeters thin according to LG and it also has the narrowest bezel at just 2.3 millimeters. Obviously, that’s not the bezel the phone will have, but it sure helps to make an incredibly slim device.
LG doesn’t have the greatest reputation when it comes to phone makers, especially when it comes to device updates, but the last few devices they’ve launched have been pretty great and they could be on track to making a name for themselves from now on. The Optimus G and the Optimus G Pro were very well received in the Android community and we gave the G Pro a decent verdict in our review. Google also chose the Optimus G as the base for the Nexus 4 and rumors are that LG will be making the Nexus 5 based on the Optimus G2. A display of 5.2 inches sounds like a lot for a Nexus device which should be as mainstream as possible when it comes to hardware and size, but you can never tell what Google is thinking, I guess we’ll have to wait until October when the new Nexus should be announced along the next version of Android.
The LG Optimus G2 will have the volume rockers in the back, right below the camera, making this a really interesting device to follow closely.
