According to Motorola, right now the Moto X bootloader is “not unlocked”. So we don’t know if that’s going to change down the road, or if it’s different by carrier like the Galaxy S4 was. The Galaxy S4 was unlocked on T-Mobile and Sprint, but the bootloader was pretty locked down on the AT&T and Verizon version.
We really shouldn’t be surprised that the bootloader is locked down, but Motorola may allow you to unlock them like they’ve done with their recent non-Verizon phones, the Photon Q and Atrix HD on Sprint and AT&T respectively.
There is a developer edition coming soon. As well as a Google Play Edition with stock Android on board. Which wouldn’t be a huge difference from the Moto X since the Moto X is primarily stock Android already. Droid-Life is also saying that Motorola is working on a SIM-unlocked phone that will be specific to AT&T’s LTE. So it looks like it won’t be truly unlocked, unfortunately.
I have a feeling that the people that Motorola is trying to market the Moto X too, the locked bootloader won’t mean much of anything. I have a feeling that Motorola is looking to market the Moto X to those that don’t want to spend a ton on a phone, to those that don’t need a Snapdragon 800, 3GB of RAM and a 1080p display. Sounds about right, right?
So the Moto X bootloader is locked, not all that surprising. Since Motorola usually ships their phones unlocked. But they do have a developer site where you can unlock them very easily. Just like HTCDev. Well I should say you can unlock most of their phones from their site, Verizon’s Motorola phones, or DROIDs are almost impossible to unlock. So we’re hoping to see an exploit for it soon.
