Here we are with some more rumors about the next version of Android, that’s Android 4.4 KitKat. This news comes out of Android Police, the same place the Hangouts rumor surfaced from last night. They have received an image which is reportedly showing the new Downloads user interface in Google’s upcoming OS update. According to Android Police, the Downloads screen will move to Holo Light, and it looks like it could be using the Cards UI as well. Which wouldn’t surprise me since just about everything else has the Cards UI now. The app will also be getting a “proper action bar” which you can see at the top. The Downloads app really hasn’t changed since Ice Cream Sandwich was introduced back in 2011. The Sort button is also making a jump from the bottom of the screen up to the top.
Android Police is also stating that they expect this new Downloads app to be a part of Android 4.4 KitKat which we should be seeing very soon. We’re still expecting Google to announce the new version of Android later this month with it becoming available in November to existing Nexus devices. So we’ll have to wait until the official announcement from Google to find out if this rumor is indeed true or not.
The first rumored announcement date was October 14th, but as we get closer to that date, it’s looking less and less likely to happen. I’m betting on the last week of October, since that was when Google announced Android 4.2, Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 last year (the actual event was cancelled thanks to Hurricane Sandy). So we’ve got a few more weeks of rumors left before we know the real deal about Android 4.4 KitKat. In the mean time, go ahead and hunt down some of those Android KitKats and see if you can win a Nexus 7!
