There’s clearly a trend emerging among all of the smartphone vendors these days. That trend seems to be gold, and lots of it. Samsung has announced a gold version of the Galaxy S4 coming soon, and of course the iPhone 5S kicked all of this off. Meanwhile, HTC is keeping things real classy with an HTC One built out of 18-carat gold, not just gold-colored parts. Oh no, this is pure gold baby. However, it’s also worth $4,400. Which is a lot for a smartphone, no? What’s that you say? You’re ready to pay up? Well, hold your horses there fella’! This is a far more prestigious device than that!
This very limited edition of the HTC One is to be produced just five times and it’s to commemorate the 18th anniversary of the MOBO awards in the UK. If you’re unfamiliar with the awards, they essentially honor black and urban artists that are soaring high in today’s music industry. Unsurprising. MOBO are calling this the “most exclusive and expensive smartphone every produced by HTC”. We believe you. It features the MOBO 18 logo laser-etched into the rear of the device and for those working in Great British Pounds, it’s worth £2,750.
Phil Blair, HTC President, Europe Middle East and Africa had this to say about the device:
“The best artists have always been given gold discs to celebrate their success, but today most people listen to music on their phone. We wanted to celebrate that fact. The award winning HTC One is the gold standard in mobile design and innovation, so it was an obvious choice to make it even more special. We’re sure the winning MOBO artist will love their unique phone and we will even be giving a lucky member of the general public the chance to get their hands on one soon too.”
So, unfortunately, this is a far more exclusive device that doesn’t carry about how much money you have in your pocket. Nope, this is more of a one-off than it is anything else. It’s unfortunate that this isn’t seeing a general release but, one lucky member of the public is in with the chance of getting one. If such a device were to go on sale, would you buy near $4,500 for this baby?
