A little over a year ago, HTC made a small comeback when it introduced its new flagship, the HTC One. It was a beautiful device by almost anybody’s account – the brushed aluminum, small bezel, dual stereo speakers on the front, and a dazzling display cramming in 468ppi, to the slightly curved back for a nice fit for your hand. Well, it is that time of year again when its successor will soon be due on the market, and rumors have never been higher – but what do we really know about the HTC M8, HTC One 2, HTC One Two, or HTC One M8 – certainly not its name. The HTC M8 will be up against some formidable competition again this year, namely the Samsung Galaxy S5, the LG G2, and later the Galaxy Note 4, and hopefully the HTC M8’s launch will go a little smoother than the launch for the HTC One, and actually make it to the carriers before the Galaxy S5 can steal it’s thunder. Right now we are looking at a release by the end of the first quarter of 2014 – this is according to the ever reliable Twitter tweeter @evleaks. That does not give HTC too much more time before its pending release, so hopefully we will start to get some more accurate dates and price leaks.
There are numerous concepts of exactly what the HTC M8 will look like when it arrives, and most of them, and the few leaks we have seen, show the device to look very similar to the current HTC One, and why mess with a good thing. We are seeing a slightly thinner and hopefully lighter version of the HTC One. While it has been suggested that the display would increase from the current 4.7-inches and run from 5-5.2-inches, we are leaning toward the 5-inches as leaked by @evleaks, with a Full HD display of 1920 x 1080, not the oft rumored 2K or 4K displays that we may see on other devices in 2014.
The processor will more than likely be the next step up from the HTC One’s Snapdragon 600, the Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor clocked at a respectable 2.26GHz and possibly a Qualcomm Adreno 330 GPU that should enhance its gaming capabilities. There is also evidence to suggest that the HTC M8 will stick with the 2GB of RAM, as found in the current HTC One, rather than jumping it up to 3GB – but that is okay, as Android runs great on 2GB, however, this will disappoint the spec freaks and possibly hurt sales. The HTC One shook up the mobile community when the camera megapixels were on the rise in most devices, HTC launched a 4MP camera that used their Ultrapixel technology that is supposed to let in more light. From a technical standpoint it works, but from a selling standpoint, it was not a big hit, and still is not. Rumors have surfaced suggesting that they may up it to 8MP with Ultrapixels, but no one is sure at this point. The HTC M8 will certainly come with the latest Android 4.4 KitKat and will benefit from the operating system’s improvements, and will, of course, come with the newest version of Sense 6.0. @evleaks has also tweeted that the wi-fi issues will no longer exist in the HTC M8, which will certainly be a strong selling point.
