It’s no secret that Samsung is dominating the Android market with massive sales however, as LG’s latest quarterly results seem to show, there is room for someone else at the top. Their latest figures, for Q4 of 2013, show record sales of 13.2 Million smartphones. Which is not only a pretty decent number, but also a 54 percent increase from the same period in 2012. That’s good news for LG’s mobile division and yes, these figures are far short of Samsung’s, it’s encouraging to see. We had heard rumors that the G2 wasn’t doing all that well and these figures might tell a different story. The 13.2 Million smartphones is a figure apparently up 12 Million smartphones from Q3 2013. It’s clear then, that LG has a long way to go, but that they’re off to a good start.
In 2013, the company made some big moves, releasing just one flagship handset and their first Android tablet in a long time – which we recently reviewed – leading to an annual revenue increase of 29 percent from the previous year, totaling $11.85 Billion. It wasn’t all good news for the company as a whole however, as the overall business posted a loss of $60 Million, which isn’t a huge number, but a loss is a loss. LG said that this was due to investment related to marketing, that their overall success for last year was hindered a little by “higher marketing investments to strengthen LG’s brand equity and intensified price competition.” In the Android world, Samsung seems to be one of the few OEMs that has gotten their marketing strategy right, creating a brand presence that is incredibly strong in just a few years. For any company, let alone Korean rival LG, to match such marketing deep pockets and big investments are needed
So, it seems that things are looking up for LG, with 2013 turning out to be a better year for mobile than 2012. The question is however, will 2014 continue to be a year of growth for LG, or will Samsung once again stifle their rival? With the G Pro 2 already confirmed for a launch next month, LG looks to be striking while the iron’s hot. Could 2014 be another good year for LG?
