For years people have been talking about their hopes of the Finnish phone maker producing an Android powered handset, and just late last year we started to see some decent concepts and supposed leaks regarding the famed phone that everyone has been waiting for. Nokia is renowned for their hardware, and it seems only fitting that consumers would want to pair some of the grade A hardware with the most popular smartphone OS. Still, many are skeptical due to the sale of Nokias Hardware division to Microsoft, which actually prohibits them from branding any handsets they make with the “Nokia” name on them. At least until 2016. Since Nokia is continuing to make Windows phone hardware for the next couple years, it just seems unlikely that we could see something from then that directly competes with the company that just bought them out.
Interestingly enough though, Nokia has apparently scheduled an event for the first day of the MWC event in Barcelona, Spain next month, which of course has plenty of people speculating on what it could be about. Some think they might announce or show off the Nokia Normandy at the press event, there’s also been rumors floating around that Nokia could have one of a couple different pieces of wearable technology in the works, which include a smart watch, and device worn on the face much like Google Glass. It’s hard to believe that Microsoft would let any such handsets powered by Android make it to market, but the concept just sounds so enticing people don’t want to let go of the dream. There have also been rumors that whatever handset Nokia does come up with that runs Android, should they manufacture one in the first place, would have lower end specs and be aimed towards emerging markets. If that would be the case, we wouldn’t really be missing much in terms of anything that houses both Nokia and Android together.
It might be hard for Nokia to make any sort of wearables or Android handsets without a hardware division, so there’s also a good possibility that the press event to come may not have anything to do with either of those two scenarios. Still, we’d love to see something from Nokia that runs Android. Anything. Even is the specs aren’t off the charts.
