Intel is widely known for their PC processors, and as well they should be because they make amazing stuff. They dominate the market for PC chips easily, but surprisingly enough they have a fairly minimal presence in the mobile device industry. That might soon change as the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 (which is powered by an Intel Atom Chip) is the number one new Android Tablet in the US during the two weeks from December 24th to January 7th. This information comes to us from Animocas data which watches US Google Play Traffic by device, and shows that during that holiday period more people were browsing the Play Store from the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 than any other Android tablet in the region. That’s pretty impressive considering Intel was almost nowhere to be found in mobile devices a couple years prior. As the chart displays, the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 makes up for nearly 10% of traffic on the US Google Play Store(9.81% to be exact), while other popular Android tablets like Google’s Nexus 7 is in 4th place with 2.15%.
It should come as no surprise that Samsung’s Galaxy Tab lineup snags the 2nd and 3rd place spots as well with the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 at #3, and Tab 2 7.0 at #2. Samsung has a well known presence in just about everything relating to Android, it’s no wonder they were able to secure the top 3 spots. The Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 houses an Intel Atom chip, which originated in Notebooks, but with help and partnership from Google Intel was able to transform the once Notebook dedicated processor into something that mobile devices could handle, and well, it looks like people are enjoying it quite a bit. The same could not be said for the other iterations of the Galaxy Tab 3 in Samsung’s lineup, as they only made up a little over 1% of New US Google Play Store traffic during that same two week period, and coming in at 8th and 9th place.
Part of this may be due in fact to the choice Samsung made to place different processors in both of those tablets that didn’t match up with the one inside the Tab 3 10.1. All three tablets in the Tab 3 line actually use different processors, and from different manufacturers to boot. This was a puzzling decision to say the least, but Samsung must have had a reason for doing so or they wouldn’t have right? Whatever the case may be, the thing to remember here is that Intel has started to establish themselves as a formidable opponent in Chip offerings for mobile devices now, and we will hopefully see them start show up in more devices in the future.
