MWC has been an interesting event to watch unfold. We’ve seen all kinds of product announcements that seem to be promising. Samsung recently announced two Tizen versions of their Galaxy Gear titled the Gear 2 and the Gear 2 Neo. Aside from that, we’ve also heard rumors that this isn’t the last we’ll be seeing of Tizen. Soon we might be seeing Tizen on our TVs and even in our pockets, in the form of a smartphone.
However, don’t hold your breath. According to Samsung’s JK Shin, we won’t be seeing a Tizen smartphone anytime soon. This doesn’t mean that the device isnt coming, though. It looks like Samsung has decided to take some time to allow the mobile operating system to mature before they release it into the harsh world of mobile technology. One of the examples of something that needs to be fixed is that there aren’t enough apps. It could be that Samsung has watched Blackberry’s actions and saw that having a large app store is extremely important to today’s consumers.
So this news mainly means that we won’t be seeing any surprise Tizen smartphones announcements at MWC. If we do, they won’t be available for quite some time. I think it’s good that Samsung is taking some time to grow their operating system before they put it out into the world.
The Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo are roughly the same device. However, the Gear 2 Neo does not come equipped with a camera. Aside from that, they both feature a 1.63-inch display, 512MB of RAM, 4GB internal storage and a small 300mAh battery. The battery life on the new Gears has gone up quite a bit, from a day on the Galaxy Gear to 2-3 days on the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo.
Just because we won’t be looking for a Tizen smartphone at Samsung’s event tonight doesn’t mean there won’t be any surprises. We are expecting to see the Samsung Galaxy S 5 at Samsung’s Unpacked event tonight. Rumor has it that we’ll be seeing a 5.2-inch screen, a 16-megapixel camera, fingerprint scanner and three color options: gold, white and black.
