Alcatel is also announcing a few devices in Barcelona today. That includes the successor to their OneTouch Idol smartphone that they announced at Mobile World Congress last year, and that is the OneTouch Idol 2 and they’ve jumped on the “mini” smartphone ship as well with the OneTouch Idol 2 Mini. These are two mid-range smartphones that also come in both 3G and 4G variants. So technically it’s four phones.
The 3G-version of the OneTouch Idol 2 has a 5-inch 960×540 IPS display, which is 7.3mm thick sporting a 1.3GHz quad-core processor, 8MP camera on the back, 2MP camera on the front. NFC and Dual-SIM is also included for those interested. It is running on Android 4.2.2 right now, but it will get an update to Android 4.4 sometime soon via OTA.
The 4G versions of the OneTouch Idol 2 dubbed the OneTouch Idol 2 S, which swap out some of the specs, like dropping to a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 1.3MP front-facing shooter, no dual-SIM , and is 7.4mm thicker instead of 7.3mm. It also gets a boost to a 1280×720 resolution display and a bump in Android versions to Android 4.3. It will also get KitKat later on.
Then the 3G variant of the OneTouch Idol 2 Mini has a 4.5-inch 960×540 IPS display, it’s also 7.9mm thick and has a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 8MP and 2MP cameras. It’ll also come with Android 4.3, and there is an option for dual-SIM capability. The 4G version is identical except it’s a bit thicker at 8.5mm, and has NFC and LTE support added on for good measure.
Alcatel has stated that these phones will be available in a wide variety of colors, including hot pink, chocolate, slate and white. So far there’s no word on pricing and availability just yet. But I wouldn’t be surprised to see one, or both of these land on T-Mobile in the future, to help round out their low-end and mid-range offerings. As they already offer a couple of Alcatel’s smartphones that they announced at this event last year.
