AT&T to be First Retail Destination to Sell Google Glass?

Google’s Glass project has been subject to a whole lot of controversy over the past couple of years and now that anyone – with $1500 lying around – can go out and purchase one to become an Explorer, it’s clear that Glass is only going to become more prevalent. Google has always said that Glass is to become a consumer product and now, we’re hearing that AT&T might be the first retail location to sell the wearable for Google. This would make a lot of sense, but it’s also a little surprising to see such a thing happen so soon.

The news comes from @evleaks who says that AT&T will be the first brick and mortar retailer for Glass in the US. As you’ve probably heard, Glass needs a smartphone to be tethered to, and well, AT&T sell smartphones as well as phone service. As such, there’s a good chance that such a deal might mean a special plan for Glass users or even a Glass model with a SIM built-in. We’d think the latter somewhat unlikely however, as getting the Glass so small with everything inside of it is challenge enough, so sticking anything more inside would be difficult. Not the mention the fact that it could bring the price up, which we keep on hearing Google is looking to dramatically reduce from the $1500 Explorer model when it becomes available for consumers.

If Google really are to partner with AT&T in order to sell Glass to consumers, we wouldn’t be surprised if the search giant were to approach other carriers and networks, too. Google has invested a lot in Glass and we doubt the company is looking to throw all of its eggs into basket, no matter how big that basket is. Regardless, this could be an important step in the right direction for Glass. The question remains though, how much will people be willing to pay for Glass when it launches.
