After all the Android TV stuff, Google transitioned into Chromecast. They bragged about how popular Chromecast has become since they announced it last July. They informed us that it’s the most popular media device on Amazon in five different countries, including the US, UK and Canada.
Before today, Chromecast was only able to be cast to by being on the same WiFi network. But now we can cast while being on LTE, instead of being on WiFi. Which is a pretty small feature, but it’s also pretty big at the same time. Imagine you go to a friends house and want to share something with them, but you don’t have their WiFi password? Well you don’t need it, just simply hit the cast button and it’ll search for nearby devices which you can then choose that Chromecast and cast to that device. It works just like magic, literally.
This update is not yet available for the Chromecast, but will be available later this year, probably with the Android L release in the fall. Google also informed us that there are over 6,000 developers and over 10,000 applications that hook into the Chromecast. Which means the number has jumped a ton since it was first released last year at the “Breakfast with Sundar Pichai” event where they announced the Nexus 7, Android 4.3 and Chromecast.
