It was no secret that Wearables would be mentioned at Google I/O this year – especially concerning Google’s own Android software developed specifically for watches…Android Wear. Google estimates that we check our phones an average of 125 times per day, and I am sad to say that is about right for me. Google believes that number can be cut down with a smartwatch running Android Wear – this way we will only check our smartphone 50 times a day and check our smartwatch a 100 times a day! Seriously, it is easier to glance at your wrist than pull out your smartphone, but the point remains that we are obsessed with checking our mobile devices.
There is a nice demo of the beta version of Android Wear in the video below – make sure you take a look at it and while it is only scraping the surface of its capabilities, you will get a good idea about how Android Wear will function. Google promised that by the end of the day, the full Android Wear SDK would be made available to App developers. Google also threw us a ‘fast ball’ and said that the LG G Watch will be available on Google Play – TODAY – although no pricing was given. The Samsung Gear Live will also be available today and for those of us that are anxiously awaiting the Moto 360, an announcement was made that it would be available later this summer.
The demonstration in the video really has me wanting to try one of these new Android Wears, especially the Moto 360 and those beautiful watch faces that will be possible. The device is controlled by swiping gestures – Up and Down will allow you to navigate between notifications and cards and once in the notification you want to be in, swiping to the left or right to bring up details of the notification or allows you to simply dismiss it. If you just do not want to deal with the notification at that moment, you can always go back to your watch later to handle the issue. If you handle the notification or dismiss it, by synchronizing with your smartphone it will also delete it there as well…avoiding having to deal with the same notification twice.
