Just as the Android L announcement came to us from San Francisco, we had a comment by HTC about their flagships from this and last year. The Android L update, available to the public in the fall, looks to be the most revolutionary and different version of Android since its original release in 2008.
HTC have been great about doing the best they can to get fast and well-built software upgrades for their device owners as soon as possible. But who saw this coming this soon. The company announced that they will work, as soon as they get access to the Android L source code, to get a version working for the One devices from this year and last year, the M7 and the M8. HTC becomes the first company to promise the update, especially since HTC seems to be getting the hang of getting software updates to its users lately.
The update coming to the M8, the One from this spring, is no surprise, but bringing the update to last year’s One, the M7, seems, on the surface to be a little off-the-wall. Let’s see why though. The M8 is this year’s flagship, so naturally it hits there first before all other HTC devices, right? Good. But LAST year’s flagship? Yes, and it makes perfect sense why. The One M7 was one of the most well-liked, and most favored device, even though it didn’t outsell the other top competitors from Samsung and LG. The M7 is owned by many people right now, and you may be reading this on one too. The M7 is getting L for the simple fact of people owning and keeping it instead of upgrading the M8. HTC recognizes that, and will act accordingly which is amazing to see a company, especially one as large and popular as HTC, actually promise (and likely follow through with) so soon after the unveil of the latest Android.
HTC will doubtless be the only or last company to promise the L update as soon as possible, so keep your eyes peeled for more announcements.
