Xiaomi isn’t the only Chinese manufacturer making high-end, affordable smartphones. Meizu is prepping the MX4 for launch later this year. They are pricing the device at a mere 1999 Yuan, or about $321 US dollars. The company wants to bring a flagship device to the Chinese market that competes with Xiaomi’s lineup, both in specs and in affordability. The whole goal of this device is to create more competition and focus attention on the fact that Meizu can do what Xiaomi and others have. The MX4 is a phablet sized device that will have a 5.5-inch display with an eye-popping 2560 x 1536 resolution. That comes out to an insane 543 pixels per inch. Those specs put the display just slightly better than the LG G3’s 2560 x 1440 panel and 534ppi. Other specs include 3GB of RAM, a Snapdragon 805 chipset, 16-megapixel rear camera and 5-megapixel front-facing camera.
Earlier this year we heard that the MX4 would come in two variants. One would be the one we listed above, the second would have the same specs except for a 5-inch, 1080p display instead of the higher 2K display. We’re guessing that it’s the 1080p variant that will be priced at $320, with the 2K version coming in at a slightly higher price point. Either way, the MX4 should cost roughly what the OnePlus One costs. Meizu has said they’re going to be bringing their smartphones to the US this year. The MX3 is available now through their online store. We hope the MX4 is on its way, too.
The Meizu MX4 is also rumored to have LTE connectivity on Chinese LTE bands. It’ll also be running the newest version of Meizu’s UI overlay, dubbed Flyme ROM. The next version brings Flyme ROM up to 4.0. Meizu is also rumored to be working on another low-cost, LTE-enabled smartphone that will probably have mid-range specs. That device is supposed to be powered by a Mediatek MT6595 chip, but we don’t know pricing or any other details about it right now.
