If you were to ask us what’s been confirmed in regards to Meizu’s incoming flagship smartphone, the MX4, we’d give you the rather boring answer of “not very much.” The idea that Meizu is plotting a follow-up to the MX3 (the handset you see pictured above) isn’t very hard to believe, but aside from that, hard facts are few and far between. That being the case, ask what’s been rumored for the Meizu MX4, and the answer will be a little more interesting. There have actually been a number of rumors about the MX4 circulating, and the newest batch from Chinese site 163.com gives the MX4 an August release window.
That could be enough to get Meizu fans excited, but 163.com took things a step further and gave the price of one of the two MX4 models as 2,000 Chinese Yuan. That translates to $320 US and some change, so Meizu is definitely targeting budget-minded consumers with this device. While the phrase “budget device” typically invokes visions of clunky handsets without much going on under the hood, that may not be the case with the MX4. Meizu apparently has two models planned, with the higher-end one rumored to have a 5.5-inch screen displaying at 1536 x 2560.
Even when we jump down to the lower-end MX4 model, it still supposedly boasts a 5-inch 1080p display, which isn’t bad by any means. The MX4 could potentially house a Snapdragon 805 processor, which is rumored to be working with 3GB of RAM. The devices reportedly also uses a 16MP rear camera, along with a 5MP front-facing shooter. At the moment, it’s unclear which model will feature this hardware, but these specifications should accompany at least one of the devices in the MX4 line.
Now comes the waiting game. While it’s always interesting to read through pages and pages of rumored specifications and launch dates, none of it means anything until it’s been confirmed. If Meizu is planning an August release for the MX4, it could be a while yet before we have details that are a little more concrete. Should that kind of hardware show up in a handset that costs around $320, we imagine it will be hard for a lot of people to resist, so we’ll definitely be keeping an ear to the ground for more.
