Unfortunately, today’s Google I/O keynote came and went without a new Nexus device. Fans and tech journalists alike were expecting a possible Nexus 6, or the rumored HTC device codenamed Volantis to be announced during this morning’s keynote. It’s not the end of the world though…
Android enthusiasts were hoping for the successor to the Nexus 5, the Nexus 6, with better specs and a new version of Android. At the very least, we were hoping to see the recently rumored Nexus 9 made by HTC and codenamed Volantis. It is said to have a 8.9 inch QHD display, Tegra K1 cpu and 4GB of RAM.
What we did get from today’s keynote is a new version of Android, currently named L. The L release brings with it a massive UI and feature overhaul, with more than 5000 new APIs. Google has changed the way Android multitasks, introduced Project Volta, and merged a little bit of Chrome with Android. I’m sure more features will be showed off when the L release launches later this year.
Not only did we see the new L release and other major announcements, but as the keynote ended, Google did give away a makeshift VR headset made of cardboard, either the LG G Watch or Samsung Galaxy Live, and a Moto 360. So, it wasn’t all for nothing.
