A new report coming out of ReadWrite tonight is informing us that the Nexus program is not going away in favor of the Android Silver program which was heavily rumored. Many of us thought that Android One was indeed Android Silver, well according to this report, it seems like that’s not the case. Android’s head of Engineering, David Burke, spoke with ReadWrite about the Nexus program, stating, “People have been commenting about Nexus because there is something else and they think that means the end of Nexus. That is the totally wrong conclusion to make”. Burke also stated that Android Silver is not something they are commenting on at this time. So we know it exists, now whether that will be the final name or not is another story. But we do know Android Silver exists.
Burke also told ReadWrite:
“When we are working, there are sort of two outputs. We’re building a Nexus device and we’re building the open source code. There is no way you can build the open source code without the phone or tablet or whatever you are building. You have to live and breathe the code you are developing.
You can’t build a platform in the abstract, you have to build a device (or devices). So, I don’t think can can or will ever go away. And then, I think Nexus is also interesting in that it is a way of us explaining how we think Android should run. It is a statement, almost a statement of purity in some respects. I don’t see why we would ever turn away from that, it wouldn’t make sense.”
So Nexus isn’t going away. And we can still expect to see a new Nexus phone and tablet in the fall. In fact, we’ve already seen a Nexus 9 leak out over the weekend that should be on sale this fall. Evleaks did say we won’t see a Nexus 6 this year, but that doesn’t mean no Nexus.
