Google introduced Android L this morning and are releasing it tomorrow in form of a developer preview. There’s all kinds of new design elements and API’s in this release. And the folks over at Droid Life have gotten screenshots of a ton of the Google apps and system apps in Android L, which are on some developer devices at Google I/O right now. The apps look really nice and I can’t wait to see developers get their apps in line with these new design guidelines. But the design isn’t all that’s new in Android L. Google also debuted a bunch of new features like Personal locking, and some 5,000 new API’s.
The Android L release should get an official name and number in the fall when it does actually get announced for real. Today was just a preview, of what’s to come in the fall. And after listening to the Android Fireside chat which just ended a little while ago, the reason why the Android team did this was to help developers get their apps ready for the Android L release and get feedback from developers before final release. Another question that was brought up during that Fireside chat was doing preview releases for all major Android upgrades, since many users are having issues with the early versions of KitKat, Jelly Bean, etc. Which I think is a good idea for future releases, how about the rest of you?
