The Blackphone, a secure device aimed at giving users back the control when it comes to deciding whether or not to share personal data or to protect themselves from governments seeking information about users, as well as corrupt organizations and other kinds of criminals phishing for personal data about anyone and everyone, is due to begin shipping as the first batch of the handsets in about three weeks from now. The Blackphone is produced and manufactured by a company called Silent Circle in partnership with Geeksphone who has made various Android powered handsets before, and backed by millions of dollars in private investment funding to see this project go through and offer a “truly secure” device for individuals looking to have that kind of power and control over their own information.
The Blackphone is said to cost around $629 to purchase and will reportedly be sold through various carriers across a number of different regions. While most of us seem more than OK with giving up bits and pieces of our data and information to use some of the many services that are available on a smartphone today, there is a larger growing number of individuals who do not seek to share that kind of information with outside parties says Silent Circle’s CEO Phil Zimmerman. It isn’t just about protecting users from companies who are asking for them to fork over data in exchange for usage of services and apps and the like, in the wake of recent information about governments dipping their hands where they don’t belong to grab up personal data about its country’s residents, there would seem to be a need for a way that users could block this sort of information grab, and the Blackphone is toted as being able to provide that kind of anonymity and security to its users.
Zimmerman expects that their are plenty of users who are open to having that type of control over their own data and he as well as the company(Silent Circle LLC) plan on selling millions of these devices. The phone itself is largely in part as secure as Silent Circle claims it to be due to its encrypted communication software. It’s said to have a 4.7-inch display as well as come powered by an Nvidia Tegra 4i CPU that houses 60 custom GPU cores. It’s also said to be supporting LTE bands 3,4,7,and 20, as well as GSM and HSPA/WCDMA. The multiple wide support range of different network frequencies makes the Blackphone very versatile, and capable of being a world traveler among handsets, no matter what carrier you use.
