Earlier this morning, we heard that all four major carriers would be offering the Gear S this fall, likely alongside the Galaxy Note 4 which launches on October 17th in a ton of countries. Now AT&T is letting us know that they are going to have the Samsung Gear S available in store for an early preview of how the device works, and how it feels on your wrist, etc., beginning September 26th, which is this Friday. There will be about 125 AT&T stores that will have the Gear S on hand. So if you’re interested in the Gear S, it’s definitely worth it to head to one of these AT&T stores and check it out. Although, I’m sure it’ll be on display at other retailers as well, especially Best Buy, where Samsung has their own mini-store inside.
The Samsung Gear S is a Tizen-based smartwatch, and has it’s own SIM card inside, so that yes you’re paying for a data plan for your smartwatch. But this means that it doesn’t need to be tethered to a smartphone, which is great. Additionally, it has a 2-inch curved display. Which is slightly bigger than the Gear 2, which had a 1.63-inch display and so did the Gear Live. Those also weren’t curved displays. We’ll be getting our hands on the Gear S in the near future, so if you’re hoping for a review of the Gear S from us, you’ll have to wait a bit longer.
The Samsung Gear S is going to be an interesting smartwatch to watch, no pun intended. The reason being, it’s the first smartwatch to run untethered completely, and come from a major manufacturer. It’s also a larger display than some of the other smartwatches we’ve seen in the past year or so. So it’ll be interesting to see how consumers gravitate to this one.
