Verizon keeps upgrading its existing LTE network to their faster XLTE coverage – today, adding twenty-two new markets to bring their total to over 400 markets across the country. Verizon did not list the twenty-two additions this time, which is rather strange for them, but if they do drop a list, we will post them as soon as possible. They do tell us that with these additions that 4 out of 5 Verizon Wireless 4G LTE markets – large and small – from New York to San Diego and down to Miami, and beyond, have access to Verizon Wireless XLTE.
Verizon’s original LTE network was really starting to slow down due to so many subscribers using the same bandwidth. This was especially bad in heavily populated areas during peak usage times. In order to boost their 4G LTE service, they turned to XLTE that utilizes their AWS (Advanced Wireless Services) spectrum. This allows Verizon to increase capacity by doubling the speeds over its LTE network. Now, in high traffic areas, more customers can access LTE at the same time, even during those peak times. Verizon uses that analogy: “adding XLTE to our 4G LTE network is like doubling the number of lanes on a freeway from 10 to 20. The extra lanes mean traffic can move faster, but the speed limit hasn’t changed.” Just remember that you do need a smartphone equipped to handle Band 4 LTE, which is the AWS spectrum. With Verizon planning this release a while back, most of their newer devices will handle the XLTE coverage and take advantage of the extra speed. Here is a list of phones that are compatible with XLTE:
Moto X – DROID ULTRA – DROID MAXX -DROID MINI – HTC One (M8) -HTC One Max – LG G2 – LG Lucid 3 – Samsung Galaxy Note 3 – Samsung Galaxy Galaxy S5 – Samsung Galaxy S4 – Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini – Samsung ATIV SE – Lumia Icon – Blackberry Q10 – Blackberry Z30 – iPhone 5C – and iPhone 5S. The Tablets that will work: iPad Air – iPad Mini Retina – LG G Pad – Samsung Note 10.1 – and Samsung Galaxy Note Pro.
