We reported yesterday that AT&T would begin selling the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 7-inch tablet in stores on October 24th. And well that’s today. So starting today you are able to pick up a Kindle Fire HDX 7-inch from AT&T for just $99 on a new contract. And if you’re buying an Amazon Fire Phone it’ll be just $49 for the Kindle Fire HDX. It’s actually kind of surprising to see AT&T continuing it’s relationship with Amazon, especially after the news we heard in Amazon’s earnings yesterday, that Amazon took a $170 million dollar loss on the Fire Phone this past quarter. Which isn’t all that surprising. Putting your first phone on one carrier in the US, and having it US only, is not good. You’re more than likely not going to have a successful phone that way, unless you have the marketing power of Samsung. And well, Amazon is realizing that now.
So despite the struggling Fire Phone at AT&T, they are bringing on the Kindle Fire HDX 7-inch today. It’s actually a pretty decent tablet. We reviewed the 8.9-inch version late last year, and it was a pretty decent tablet, hardware-wise. All the issues I had with the tablet were software-wise. The biggest issue being the lack of Google services. Which means no Gmail, no YouTube, no Google Play Movies, none of Google’s services are available on the Fire HDX. Which kind of sucks, but Amazon wants you using their own ecosystem, which does make sense. And if you’re a big Amazon user, this is going to be a great tablet, especially with Amazon Prime Instant Video adding all kinds of new content lately.
