So HTC’s ‘Double Exposure’ has just finished and it was a camera extravaganza. For those interested in camera features this was certainly the event for you. The big news was the highly anticipated and expected launch of HTC’s new standalone camera, the HTC RE. However in addition to this HTC also let the Eye out of the bag too. Which Eye I hear you ask? The HTC Desire Eye.
As you should be aware by now this device is certainly designed to be a selfie phone offering two massive 13 MP cameras (front and back). However, the specs for the device in general are not quite what one would expect from a selfie-only device and instead the device is packing. Yep the Desire Eye looks to be a decent all-round device and actually not that far off the flagship HTC One M8. In addition to its big cameras, the Desire Eye comes with a 5.2-inch Full HD display. Inside the Eye offers 2GB RAM and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor (clocks at 2.3GHz). The Eye also offers 16 GB internal memory as well as expandable microSD slot (128GB) and comes loaded with a wealth of features including an accelerometer, proximity sensor, ambient Light sensor and gyro sensor. The device runs on Android 4.4.4 (KitKat) and is waterproof (up to 1m for 30 minutes). Lastly, the battery is a 2,400mAh offering. All in all not a bad little device.
However to add to its generally good specs and seemingly high-end demeanor the device also looks as though it is likely to perform extremely well. PhoneArena did some preliminary benchmarks tests and the Desire Eye did surprisingly well. Most notably on the early Geekbench 3 test performed by PhoneArena the Desire Eye scored better than Samsung’s (other) flagship device the Galaxy S5 which says quite a lot. PhoneArena did note that the Desire Eye did not perform so well on an AnTuTu test although they also did point out that this is slightly premature to assume anything from the AnTuTu test. The software running on the unit they tested may be an unfinished or incomplete build and once the actual fully released device is unleashed it will most probably score even better. Either way the early indications are that the Desire Eye is not only a stylish, self-obsessed, egomaniac, fashionista device – but also one that delivers a decent bang for its buck.
