Samsung might be having some difficulties keeping its market share and selling as many devices as they used to sell a year ago, but that’s just one more incentive for the company to produce great products and regain faith of the consumers. Galaxy S6 might be just the smartphone that will do just that. We’ve been hearing a ton of rumors already and the device will launch in February or March next year, most probably. We’ll probably hear a ton more in the coming months, but that doesn’t stop us to see what we have thus far and do a sort of a mini roundup of everything we think we know thus far. So, let’s get started.
First and foremost, let’s mention the most reliable information we’ve received thus far. SamMobile’s sources have reported certain information when it comes to the Galaxy S6. The whole project is reportedly called “Project Zero” by the staff who’s working on it. This is odd on its own considering Samsung usually has a pattern for codenames of its flagship devices and it always uses a single letter as a codename, for example, “Project A”, “Project B”, “Project C”, etc. We also got an explanation on why is that not the case this time around, Samsung allegedly wants to differentiate this device considering it will be completely different than the Galaxy S5, the company wants to re-invent the brand and not make yet another iterative update. All that sounds good, but it remains to be seen if Samsung can actually deliver.
We’ve also heard some rumors stating that the device will feature the new and improved UFS memory, which is a next-gen NAND Flash memory which combines a high-speed Solid State Drive (SSD) and a lower power eMMC in order to achieve great transfer speeds and lower energy consumption at the same time. eMMC can transfer data at speeds of 400MB per second while this new UFS flash memory can hit speeds of 1.2GB per second. There was some talk about a curved display as well, though I don’t believe that will come true, it may be slightly curved, but nothing that a regular consumer would notice, like it’s the case with the LG G Flex for example. The device will most probably have a metallic trim around, just like the Galaxy Alpha, Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note Edge, Galaxy A3 and A5.
Regarding the specs, well, we don’t know much. We actually received a ton of rumors and each of them is pulling in a different direction basically. Let’s try to make something out of it, shall we. Galaxy S6 will quite probably come in 2 processor versions, one will sport Samsung’s Exynos chip and the other one will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon offering. Exynos 7420 is a 64-bit octa-core chip and might be the chip Samsung will implement into this device, the other version will quite probably be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810. 3 or 4GB of RAM will be a part of the package as well, most rumors are pointing towards the 4GB of RAM, though Samsung could easily opt for 3GB of RAM in the end, we’ll see. As for the camera, Samsung will opt either for Sony’s newly introduced IMX240 sensor or will go with its own ISOCELL sensor, new and improved of course. Either way, the camera will quite probably sport a 20+ megapixel sensor. Android 5.0 Lollipop will quite probably be available out of the box with Samsung’s UI on top of it. Speaking of UI, I really, really hope Samsung will make it less bloated.
The latest rumors are saying the device will launch at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in March next year and I tend to agree with that. Keep in mind that these are all rumors and nothing has been confirmed just yet.
