Ingress, Google’s augmented reality adventure game that pits the Enlightened against the Resistance in a fight to capture Portals and change humanities future, turned two years old on November 15. To celebrate, Google’s Niantic Labs released an infographic and some pretty cool stats about the real-world game. The game was founded by Google Earth creator John Hanke with the goal of helping players have “adventures on foot” and discover the world that they live in. Ingress has come a long way since it first rolled out.
In the past two years, Ingress has been downloaded over eight million times by players in over 200 countries and territories across the globe. Ingress agents have walked a total of 78,000,000. That’s 126,000,000 kilometers! Google has held live Ingress events in 281 cities around the world, and over 52,000 players have attended these events. Ingress events have been held in cities like Dublin, Chicago, Taipei, Prague, San Diego, Munich, and a bunch more. Over 178.1 million Portals have been captured in the game. These portals are usually marked by real-world landmarks, museums, historic sites, and local businesses. Players have submitted over three million sites for Portals themselves.
Google also announced an all-new monthly series called Ingress First Saturday, with the hashtag #IngressFS. These monthly events are designed to help new Ingress players become Agents and discover the Ingress world through real-world meetups with other players. The first event happened on November 1. The next Ingress First Saturday is scheduled for December 6 in over 150 countries worldwide. The events let new Agents team up with experienced players to learn how the game works and make new friendships. You can find more information about Ingress First Saturday’s here.
You can get Ingress for free on Android and iOS and learn more about the game on the Ingress website. It’s wild to think that the game has come so far in such short period of time. It’s now a global phenomenon that you can be a part of, too. Check out the full infographic below.
