Samsung showcased a bunch of products at company’s Unpacked event at IFA back in September. Most notably, this Korean manufacturer introduced company’s long-awaited Galaxy Note 4 phablet, which many of you have been waiting for. Other than that we’ve seen Samsung showcase their Galaxy Note Edge handset, which is sort of a prototype device. Gear S, Tizen-based smartwatch, also made an appearance and last, but not least, Gear VR was announced as well. Gear VR is Samsung’s virtual reality headset which they produced with the help of Oculus, or should I say Facebook, considering Oculus is now owned by the social network giant. This headset is meant to work with the Galaxy Note 4 at the moment and isn’t much good on its own, but is that about change? It seems like Samsung is ready to throw serious amount of cash into the whole virtual reality game.
KoreaHearald reports that this Korean giant is actually already investing in game companies and developers in order to boost its VR business. Samsung is allegedly investing in game developers who have solid ideas for company’s Gear VR headset. At least one Korean role-playing game developer has received investment from Samsung according to KoreaHerald’s sources and will release a game designed for the Gear VR soon. This report also says that there are more companies in line to release games for this virtual reality headset. According to the latest reports, Gear VR will launch in early December in select markets. Some reports are claiming that the device is having some overheating issues at the moment, so if that’s true, Samsung’s release dates might move eventually.
Do you think this is a good move by Samsung? Have you tried out Oculus Rift at some point and do you think these virtual reality headsets are the future? I honestly haven’t had the chance to try out Oculus Rift just yet, or any other virtual reality headset for that matter, so I’m not exactly the best person to ask. The idea sounds rather appealing to me though, though holograms sound even cooler. I’m joking of course, we’re nowhere near that sort of technology (at least not in mass production), but a guy can dream, right?
