Samsung’s Galaxy Note Edge was announced back at IFA in Berlin last September alongside it’s similar and yet different brother, Galaxy Note 4. These two handsets both sport the same specs on the inside, as well as the majority of software features and the S Pen, but Note Edge is a somewhat different beast. This handset is sort of a prototype device by Samsung and we all know how much this Korean company like its prototype devices, after all, the first Galaxy Note was one of those as well and see where it is now, one of the most popular handsets in the world.
The main difference between the two devices (other than the small difference in size of the main screen), is that side (Edge) display which Note Edge is sporting. That panel is curved and it lays on the right side of the device. This display gives the phone a completely new functionality considering that panel actually has its own set of functions which are tied in with the OS, but can come in handy at times. For example, that curved screen can be your extremely dim night clock as well as your camera options panel, so that the main screen is completely free for the viewfinder when you take your images. The possibilities are huge for the device, but the question is how will it sell, the device is odd and it really leaves the “not-so-easy-to-handle” impression.
This handset didn’t even start selling properly and there are already reports a new version of it is on the way. SM-N916S popped up on Zauba recently, Indian import and export website, touting a new model of the handset (the original carries the SM-N915X name). Reports are coming all over the place stating that this is an upgraded version of the Note Edge which is sporting a 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, compared to the Snapdragon 805 which is powering the original Note Edge. Rumors are also saying that the memory and LTE speeds will also be upgraded and that the device will launch in South Korea first, while the availability will be limited in other regions, which is to be expected. Galaxy Note Edge is expected to launch in China on November 28th and the expected price is around 7,000 Yuan ($1,141), which is A LOT of money.
These are not official news of course, but these listings are usually right. I for one, really don’t see why would Samsung release a Snapdragon 810 version of the handset considering the Note Edge was revealed recently and the Snapdragon 805 is a beastly SoC, but that’s just me.
